Did you know that the average menstruating person uses up to 12,000 pads or tampons in their lifetime? Many of them contain plastic, which takes hundreds of years to decompose. This means that a pad or tampon you used as a teenager still exists in some landfill.
This shows how big a challenge disposable menstrual waste is. That's why more and more of us are looking for alternative solutions.
Let's be honest, unfortunately, zero-waste menstruation is not possible. But we can do a lot to limit the amount of waste we produce during menstruation.
Instead of disposable pads and tampons, we can use reusable products. Currently, we have a large selection of such items:
Bestie menstrual disc – the first Polish disc with a capacity of 50 ml. It holds as much blood as 2 cups, 6 tampons, or even 8 pads! It is made of medical-grade silicone with the highest biocompatibility and natural pH. It stays in the vagina, resting on an "anatomical shelf." You can have sex while using the disc. You can safely use it for up to 12 hours. If you take proper care of it, it will last you even 5-10 years.
Menstrual cup – it is similar to a disc, but has a smaller capacity (25-30 ml). It also differs from the disc in how it stays in the vagina (by suction). Having sex while using a cup is not possible. You can safely use it for up to 12 hours. Manufacturers declare a cup lifespan of between 2 and 10 years.
Menstrual underwear – these are reusable undergarments with a built-in absorbent pad. The underwear is made of several layers of material (most often cotton). Manufacturers usually recommend changing underwear every 4-12 hours depending on the intensity of bleeding. Menstrual underwear can last you for 2-7 years.
Reusable pads - they are a great alternative if you are used to disposable pads. Depending on the intensity of your bleeding, you can use them for 3-6 hours. Similar to menstrual underwear, reusable pads are usually made of cotton and PUL membrane. There are also wool pads with a cotton absorbent insert. Reusable pads have snaps instead of adhesive to fasten them to underwear. Their lifespan can be several years.
First, think about what your period is like and what you expect from menstrual products (besides, of course, not leaking!). Also consider your lifestyle and when you feel most comfortable. Maybe you play sports, travel a lot, or, on the contrary, prefer peace and quiet at home during your period?
Once you know what you need, it's time to choose a product and start testing!
